Gordons Invincibles Clinch Netball Title in Unbeaten Season

Monday 30th April 2018

Gordons’ netball team has clinched the division one title of the JLD Leeds Law and Business League in style, after going the entire season unbeaten.

The Gordons Invincibles played a total of 16 games, winning 15 and drawing just one in their championship campaign. Kicking off the season in style, Gordons beat 2017 winners, the Uni of Law, holding their nerve for a 21-19 victory in their first division one league game.

Their strong form continued with a series of thrilling wins, including a crushing 24-point victory over Lyons Davidson and a destructive 22-point defeat of Deloitte. The team’s sternest test came at the hands of DAC Beachcroft; however, the sides could not be separated, with the game ending in an 18-all stalemate.

Gordons signed off the season on a high through a comfortable 25-19 victory over Addleshaw Goddard, with centre Chrissy Clappison scooping the Player of the Match honour.

Inspired by the leadership of captain Rebecca D’Arcy, the team consisted of Alex Dixon and Ingrid Munyaneza up front, and Chrissy Clappison, renowned for her tireless work in the engine room of the team, playing in centre. In defence were Lauren Barclay, who featured week in week out as keeper and Samantha Nickson who was also vice captain,.

Also featuring for the side during the campaign were Jennifer Herdman, Victoria Martin, Lauren Wurzal and Eleanor Tordoff, with occasional appearances from Jen Kimberley, Catherine Walmsley and Catherine Woodward.

Commenting on the landmark season, the side’s skipper, Rebecca D’Arcy, said: “After winning our first game we never looked back. I thought we would have no chance of winning many games in division one, if any at all, but the girls worked so hard and gave it their all.”

Eager to pass the baton onto another willing skipper, Rebecca has decided to relinquish the captaincy ahead of the new season. She said: “I have decided to bow out on a high and hand my captain’s hat over, if anyone would like the job for next season, please let me know!”
