Following its hugely successful inaugural ‘Wharfedale Ton’ charity bike ride, representatives from Gordons, Lloyds Bank and audit, tax and consulting firm RSM have donated almost £7,000 to the Marie Curie Cancer Care hospice in Bradford.

In total, 120 amateur cyclists took part in the 100-mile challenge this summer, which was organised by Gordons, Lloyds Bank and audit, tax and consulting firm RSM. The Hospice will use the money raised – which totalled £6,907 – to fund patient care at the Bradford Hospice.

Commenting on the donation, Sharon Link, Community Fundraiser at Marie Curie, said: “We are very grateful to all those who took part in the ‘Wharfedale Ton’ and worked so hard to raise the money.  These funds will allow us to continue to offer much-needed support for people living with terminal illnesses, and their families. Gordons has raised enough to pay for 345 hours of nursing care.”

The specially designed ‘Wharfedale Ton’ route took in some of the most beautiful countryside Yorkshire has to offer, stretching across Wharfedale from Ilkley to York and back again.

Gordons partner, Phil Paget, said:  “The ‘Wharfedale Ton’ was a resounding success, and I am very proud of all those who took part not only for their efforts in the ride but also those who donated so generously for such a good cause.  The Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice is doing vital work for the community in Bradford and we are very happy to be able to support the Hospice in this way.”

The Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford offers specialist care for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses. As well as a 16-bed inpatient unit, the hospice also has a fully equipped day therapy service department that offers individual support sessions and various group activities to patients and their families.

Sponsors of the Wharfedale Ton also included Arena Group, Calder World of Travel, Roberts Mart & Co Ltd, Naylor Wintersgill, Reed Boardall Group, Craven Jewellers, 1825 Standard Life, Lishmans of Ilkley, the Riverside Hotel, Mercure Hotels, and OTE Sports Nutrition.
