Gordons becomes first organisation to sponsor a nurse at Marie Curie’s Bradford Hospice

Friday 1st February 2013

Yorkshire law firm Gordons has become the first organisation to sponsor a nurse for a year at Marie Curie’s Bradford hospice.

Gordons is sponsoring Adele Starkey, who works at the leading charity’s Maudsley Street hospice and whose name badge now sports the firm’s logo.

Marie Curie has introduced the Sponsor a Nurse scheme to encourage companies and individuals to fund the costs of nurses and help meet its running expenses in a challenging economic climate for all charities.

Each nurse sponsorship costs the backer £19,000 and Gordons’ involvement is one result of the firm’s staff having raised £32,000 overall after adopting Marie Curie’s Bradford hospice as their chosen charity for 2011-12.

Over £6,000 of this money was raised by teams from the firm taking part in the Marie Curie Great Escape Challenge – involving hiking, cycling and kayaking, among other activities – over a weekend in Staffordshire. Other fundraising ventures included organising a gourmet curry evening, ‘bake offs’ and quizzes, running half and full marathons and tackling the 81-mile Etape Caledonia bike ride across the Scottish Highlands.

Christine Hamilton Stewart MBE, Marie Curie vice-president and Bradford hospice patron, said: “We’re extremely grateful for the incredible support Gordons and its people continue to provide for our organisation. Adele is a very talented and dedicated nurse, whose attentions make a huge difference to a great many patients at a very difficult time, and it’s those people who will appreciate Gordons’ gesture most of all.”

Marie Curie provides end-of-life care to terminally ill patients in their own homes and its nine hospices throughout the UK. The Bradford site has a 16-bed inpatient unit and a fully-equipped day service department, offering individual support sessions and various group activities to patients and their families.

John Holden, senior partner, Gordons, said: “Our connection with Marie Curie’s Bradford hospice means we know better than most what outstanding work the organisation does. We’re therefore delighted to lead the way in backing this excellent initiative and would strongly urge other businesses to follow suit.”

One of the UK’s most successful law firms with offices in Leeds and Bradford. Gordons has been established for over 168 years, currently employs 280 people and has a turnover of over £25m.  Gordons’ excellence was recognised in a number of award schemes during 2012:
