Updates to Price Marking laws
Tuesday 14th April 2026
The Price Marking Order 2004, which governs the manner in which retailers must display pricing information, has been amended. The amendments will come into force on 6 April 2026 and will introduce the following key changes:
- Dual pricing: Where a product is offered at more than one price (for example, a standard price and a loyalty scheme price), the selling price and the unit price must be displayed separately and clearly for each price point. This is of particular relevance to retailers operating loyalty or membership discount schemes.
- Unit pricing standardisation: Goods sold by weight must be priced per kilogram, and goods sold by volume must be priced per litre, ensuring consistency and comparability for consumers.
- Reduced pricing: Where a general price reduction is applied, both the reduced selling price and the corresponding reduced unit price must be displayed.
- Legibility requirements: All price information, including selling price, unit price, any applicable commission or conversion rate, and any VAT changes, must be presented in a clear, legible font of reasonable size.
