Andy Brian shares comments with Essential Retail on the closure of non-essential retail distribution centres during Covid-19 pandemic

Andy Brian, partner at Gordons and an expert in the retail sector, has been quoted by Essential Retail on the news that non-essential retailers are closing their warehouse and distribution centres to help combat the spread of coronavirus.

Next announced it would not be taking any more online orders due to fears around staff safety, whilst River Island has also closed its warehouse distribution centre in an attempt to protect its colleagues from the virus.

Other non-essential retailers which have closed their eCommerce operations include Tk Maxx, Schuh, Moss Bros and Fenwick.

Commenting on the closure of the distribution centres, Andy Brian said: “Like many sectors the retail industry seems is grappling with how to maintain operations whilst meeting the Government’s guidelines on social distancing.

“Outside of the ‘essential’ retailers that are still open to the public, Boris Johnson’s advice to shoppers was to keep buying online. But the reality is that this requires a huge network of staff to process, pick and distribute orders, and it is not always practical to work two metres apart in these roles.
