Yorkshire law firm Gordons advises Dewsbury furniture retailer HSL on opening of two new stores

Dewsbury-based back care furniture retailer HSL has opened new stores in Birmingham and Henley-on-Thames, with help from Yorkshire law firm Gordons.

The latest outlets, a 3662sq ft site in the Midlands city’s Edgbaston district and a 3358sq ft outlet in the Oxfordshire market town, mean HSL now has 16 stores in a network stretching from Bathgate to Plymouth. The company supplies an extensive range of craftsman-built, handmade furniture, including chairs, sofas, recliners and beds.

Solicitor Simon Mydlowski led a team from Gordons’ commercial property department which drafted and negotiated the leases for the new stores. This work means Gordons has helped HSL over five new outlets in the last year, following its work on the new premises in Cardiff, Nottingham and Romford.

Andy Brook, operations director at HSL, said: “Acquiring the Birmingham and Henley-on-Thames stores are very important moves for us, as they give us footholds in new areas and place us within easy travelling distance for many hundreds of thousands more people.

“In these deals, as in all the others, Gordons were quick to react to our needs and ensure we could move into the sites in a timely fashion.”

HSL now plans to open another five stores in various locations in the UK in the next 12 months.

Founded 40 years ago by the parents of current managing director William Burrows, HSL offers free delivery within the UK mainland and its products carry quality guarantees. The company offers no-quibble, full refunds to any customers deciding they are not satisfied with their furniture within seven days of purchase.

Simon Mydlowski said: “Extending its presence across the country is a fundamental part of HSL’s growth strategy. It’s great to be playing an important part in the development of such an admirable, family-run business.”
