Update on increased court fees

Wednesday 4th March 2015

Following the Government’s announcement in January about a proposed increase to court issue fees (see our earlier article here), the increases are now set to come into force from 9 March 2015 subject to the outcome of a debate in the House of Lords this week.

The announcement gave only a week’s notice for parties involved in disputes to decide whether or not to issue claims with existing issue fees before they increase dramatically on 9 March.

This however may not be the end of the matter as the Law Society is set to challenge the increases by judicial review. Their opinion is that the increased court fees will hamper access to justice. The fees are in fact designed to raise £120m a year to help the government cover the cost of funding the court service.
