Waste company fined £300,150 after teenager fractures leg

Tuesday 14th July 2026

The teenager was working for a clinical waste management company when his foot slipped on an unguarded conveyor channel, and he sustained several fractures to his right leg as a result.

The investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the company failed to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and should have provided guarding on the conveyor. HSE guidance states that measures must be taken to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery or stop the movement of the dangerous parts before anyone enters.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
