UK Government issues temporary ban on sale of disposable BBQs

In response to current droughts and increased risk of wildfires due to high temperatures across the UK, the Government has regulated that disposable barbecue (BBQ) should not be made available for supply either in store or online until further notice.

A disposable BBQ is a product designed for domestic single-use only, outdoors, not intended for re-filling or reuse. Comprising of fuel tray, grill grid and including charcoal fuel sufficient to provide sufficient cooking temperature for the duration of a single cooking episode.

The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR) require consumer products to be ‘safe’ under their reasonably foreseeable use. In the context of ongoing weather and environmental conditions, it is the Government’s position that disposable barbecues cannot be considered a safe product.
