Price Marking (Amendment) Order Comes into Force
Thursday 16th April 2026
The amended price marking order, aiming to provide greater clarity to consumers about the price of goods, has now come into force.
The amendments state that prices must be unambiguous, legible, and easily identifiable. Selling and unit prices must be displayed for all products, including for promotional offers and loyalty discounts, unless an exemption applies. All prices must be clearly shown, and one must not be given prominence over another.
Hampers containing multiple products comprising of different units, and equivalent items, are excluded from the need to display unit prices.
General notices may now only be used for large-scale and short-term discounts, however where it is reasonably practicable to do so, for example where a promotion is run on one specific item for an extended period, pricing must be updated on the products.
Breaches of the order can result in criminal prosecution, unlimited fines, or civil enforcement consisting of a fine of up to 10% of global turnover.
