Passenger train derailed in Cumbria

Monday 17th November 2025

On 3 November 2025, a passenger train derailed after hitting a landslip. The train was travelling at around 83 mph when it hit debris washed onto the track by the previous night’s rainfall. There were nine staff and 86 passengers onboard, and four people received treatment for minor injuries.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) found that the drainage channel was unable to accommodate the volume of rainfall. This caused the land to become saturated, ultimately causing the landslip.

RAIB will conduct a further investigation looking at the design, maintenance and management, the operational response to weather warnings, performance of the train during derailment and the underlying factors which may have contributed to the derailment.
