Machine manufacturer fined £170,000 after worker’s fingers crushed

Thursday 11th June 2026

A company has been fined after an employee’s hand was trapped beneath a machine during a lifting operation.

The machine tool fitter was taking part in a lifting operation involving a forklift truck when his right hand became stuck under a three-tonne machine. Following treatment, two of the worker’s fingers were amputated.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the company failed to ensure that the lifting operation was properly planned and carried out safely.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 8(1) of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998.
