HSE publishes annual report on work-related fatal injury statistics

Tuesday 14th July 2026

HSE has published its annual work-related fatal injuries statistics for Great Britain.

It’s important to remember that these statistics represent people who went to work and did not return home.

Whilst there is a small improvement from last year, there is still more that can be done to make the workplace safer.

Key figures for 2025/2026 include:

  • Sadly, 126 people died whilst at work. Since the pandemic years, this is the lowest recorded number which has been steadily trending down year on year.
  • Falls from height remain the leading cause of fatal injuries, however this has come down from the average over the last five years. Struck by a moving vehicle has increased.
  • Construction remains the industry with the highest recorded fatal injuries. However, when considering fatality rate per 100,000 workers, agriculture, forestry and fishing greatly exceeds construction.
  • 32% of recorded fatal injuries were to workers over the age of 65 which is disproportionate to the age of the workforce.
  • There were 2,146 deaths from mesothelioma, down slightly from last year’s report. This is expected to continue to trend down. The full report is available here.
