HSE opens public consultation on restricting PFAS in firefighting foams

Tuesday 19th August 2025

HSE has opened a six-month consultation seeking views from stakeholders on restricting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in firefighting foams. PFAS are known as forever chemicals as they do not break down easily and may be harmful to health. HSE has published accompanying documents, including Annex 15 which is its scientific analysis of the potential restrictions on use of PFAS in firefighting foams. The consultation is requesting views from those working in industries using PFAS containing firefighting foams to allow them to form a proportionate view on any restrictions.
