Handyman sentenced after boiler caused immediate danger to life

Tuesday 14th July 2026

The self-employed handyman claiming to be on the Gas Safe Register carried out gas work on a property that resulted in several defects, including a gas leak that inspectors from Gas Safe Register called an ‘immediate danger to life’.

The investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the individual had carried out the gas work without being competent to do so. Only individuals who are on the Gas Safe Register should carry out gas work and that this work must be in accordance with appropriate standards.

The handyman pleaded guilty to breaching Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, Regulation 3(3) and received a 26-week suspended sentence.
