Government Announces Major Reform of Product Safety Laws

Thursday 16th April 2026

The Government today set out a consultation on new measures to protect customers from unsafe products.

The Government plans to use powers within the Product Regulation and Metrology Act 2025 to strengthen current consumer protections, increase scrutiny around online sellers and make business responsibilities clearer. The changes aim to support responsible businesses.

There are three consultations, with the first including a new framework to cover a wider scope of products, the second focusing on the reform of product safety rules, and the third focusing on the UK’s furniture fire safety rules. The consultations have been published in response to the rapidly changing business environment as supply chains become more globalised, technology changes, and precedence of online shopping.

The consultations are open for 12 weeks and will close on 23 June 2026.
