Company fined for lack of employers’ liability insurance
Thursday 7th May 2026
A scrap metal merchant has been fined £1,000 after pleading guilty to breaching the Employers’ Liability Compulsory Insurance Act 1969.
Employers are required by law to hold a valid certificate of insurance should any employee suffer a work-related injury or illness that warranted a claim for damages. Failure to hold the correct employers’ liability insurance for your business is a criminal offence and companies can be fined up to £2,500 per day that insurance is not held. Further, companies will be liable to pay any compensation claims and legal fees if an employee was to take action for an injury or illness whilst insurance is not held.
