Business owner sentenced after worker fell through roof

Tuesday 14th July 2026

A business owner who was uninsured has been given a 12-month suspended prison sentence and 260 hours of unpaid work after an employee fell through a roof when carrying out a job.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the business owner had instructed the employee to walk across the fragile roof surface without any control measures, such as crawling boards and netting, in place to prevent or protect against a fall.

The business owner pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 6(3) of The Work at Height Regulations 2005, and at a previous hearing he pleaded guilty to not having Employers’ Liability Compulsory Insurance (ELCI) at the time of the incident.
