Yorkshire law firm Gordons has named Candlelighters – a Yorkshire charity for children with cancer – as the firm’s chosen charity and will support it with a programme of fundraising activities for the next year.

The charity is dedicated to providing a range of practical support to children living with cancer, as well as their parents and carers. It also provides funds to support the Candlelighters Children’s Cancer Research Laboratory and other research projects in Yorkshire.

This year will also see the centralisation of children’s cancer services in Yorkshire at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and Candlelighters is seeking to raise an additional £500,000 to support the move from its current base at St James’s Hospital.

Candlelighters company secretary, Sally Amos, said: “To have the support of a law firm the size and stature of Gordons for the coming year is a great boost for us, especially with the move to LGI. The work they have previously done with other charities has shown that they really get involved and we are looking forward to working with them to raise much needed money for Candlelighters.”

The charity is run by the parents of cancer patients and the medical staff who treat them. Candlelighters supports a regional children’s cancer centre which caters for 120 new patients each year. The activity the charity carries out helps ensure that every child admitted receives as much care and comfort as possible during their stay.

Gordons senior partner, John Holden, commented: “Everyone at Candlelighters works extraordinarily hard to help children and their families cope with the impact of cancer whist providing remarkable levels of care.

“The charity deals with extremely moving stories of real courage each day and we hope by supporting them that we can help Candlelighters continue to carry out the outstanding work that they do across the county.”
