Tuesday 14th December 2010

One of the region’s highest profile Indian restaurant chains has opened its tenth restaurant following commercial property and licensing advice from Yorkshire law firm Gordons.

Akbars is due to open in Newcastle on January 14, 2011. Representing a total investment of £1,200,000, the restaurant is located in the new City Quadrant development on St James Boulevard in the city centre. The 300-seat venue – which also boasts banqueting facilities – will serve the chain’s award-winning Asian cuisine.

Established in 1995 in Bradford, Akbars currently has restaurants throughout the North of England and the Midlands including Leeds, Manchester, York, Sheffield, Middlesbrough and Birmingham. Gordons commercial property solicitor Simon Mydlowski advised Akbars’ managing director Shabir Hussain on the restaurant’s lease and licensing agreements.

Shabir said: “The team at Gordons always provide us with excellent advice and have been instrumental in enabling our ambitious expansion plans.

“The launch of our tenth restaurant in a popular development like City Quadrant is an exciting one and brings us a step closer to achieving our long term vision of taking our style of food and service across the UK.”

An established law firm with offices in Leeds and Bradford, Gordons currently employs 250 people, 180 of which are fee earners. The firm’s turnover for the last financial year was £22m and it is one of the UK’s top 100 practices.

Simon commented: “It’s great to see Akbars continue to go from strength-to-strength. Shabir and his team have deservedly earned themselves a reputation for providing high quality cuisine in vibrant venues and this has helped underpin Akbars’ continued growth. We wish them every success with their Newcastle venture.”
