One of Yorkshire’s highest profile Indian restaurant chains sought commercial property and licensing advice from Leeds and Bradford law firm Gordons to enable it to open its ninth restaurant.

Akbars is due to open its Birmingham restaurant on September 24 this year. Located on Hagley Road in the suburb of Edgbaston, it will seat 300 people, serve the restaurant chain’s award-winning Asian cuisine and will have a private function suite that can cater for up to 200 guests.

Established in 1995 in Bradford, Akbars currently has restaurants throughout the North of England including Leeds, Manchester, York, Sheffield and Middlesbrough. The restaurant chain was named Business of the Year for the second year in succession at the 2009 Asian Business Development Network Awards.

Gordons commercial property solicitor Simon Mydlowski advised Akbar’s managing director Shabir Hussain on the restaurant’s lease and licensing agreements.

Shabir Hussain said: “We have worked with Simon and the team at Gordons for the last five years and they have played an important advisory role in our continued growth. We always receive a prompt, pragmatic service that provides clear guidance and enables us to achieve our business objectives.

“Our expansion into Birmingham is an exciting one. It already has an excellent reputation for Asian cuisine so we are looking forward to offering our particular style of food and service within such a vibrant city restaurant scene.”

It is also anticipated that Akbars will open a 300 seat restaurant in Newcastle city centre in January 2010 and Gordons is also currently assisting the restaurant in securing the lease.

Simon Mydlowski commented: “The continued expansion of Akbars is testimony to the vision and dedication of Shabir and his team. They seek to deliver excellence in everything that they do and this single-minded focus has meant they have continued to expand at pace whilst ensuring the continued stability of the business.

“We are certain that the new Birmingham restaurant will be a resounding success and we look forward to working with Akbars to enable the company’s ongoing development.”
