Law firm Gordons has raised £2,300 for Yorkshire children’s cancer charity Candlelighters following its organisation and hosting of a five-a-side football tournament involving 21 teams from across the county.
Gordons organised the tournament at Goals soccer centre in Leeds as part of a year-long fundraising effort for Candlelighters, a charity dedicated to providing a range of practical support to children living with cancer, as well as their parents and carers.
This year will also see the centralisation of children’s cancer services in Yorkshire at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and Candlelighters is seeking to raise £500,000 to support the move from its current base at St James’s Hospital.
The overall winners of the tournament were accountants BDO Stoy Hayward who progressed as winners of their group with four wins from four games. They went on to defeat Callcredit plc in the quarter final, Bradford Enterprise Fund in the semi-final and Hallmark Cards in the final by two goals to one.
For teams finishing third and fourth in their respective groups a Plate competition was organised which was won by chartered surveyors Walker Singleton who beat accountants Naylor Wintersgill two nil in the final.
Gordons partner John Owen presented the trophies to the winners and runners up. He commented: “This is the seventh successive year we have held the football tournament and it keeps growing in size and stature.
“There was some great football played with BDO Stoy Hayward running out worthy winners. It was a hugely enjoyable afternoon and we would like to thank everyone who took part to help us raise a substantial amount of money for Candlelighters.”
