DB Orthodontics acquires extra site in growth move

Thursday 8th August 2013

Queen’s Award for Enterprise winner DB Orthodontics Limited is smiling brightly after acquiring a new £500,000 unit adjoining its existing premises in Silsden’s Ryefield Way.

The fast-growing orthodontic and laboratory supplies company has bought the 6,740 sq ft Unit 8 in the building. This means it now owns the entire 21,260 sq ft site and has invested well over £1.6m in accommodation at the development, between Keighley and Skipton.

Previous Unit 8 owners Jacksons of Silsden, who supply limousines and mini-coaches, as well as being an independent funeral director, have moved into the adjoining Unit 10. This is rented from DB Orthodontics, which now occupies the rest of the site.

DB Orthodontics acquired Unit 8 with advice from commercial property consultant Chris Green, at Yorkshire law firm Gordons. He has worked with company founder David Burdess since the 1980s and has helped the organisation buy all its premises to date.

Mr Burdess said: “We like working with Chris because, in addition to being knowledgeable about the law, he is always available, moves very quickly when we need him to, and deals with any issues that arise without fuss. He was particularly valuable in this transaction because of the quality of his relationship with NatWest, the bankers involved.”

Orthodontics is a specialised part of dentistry which treats patients who have a need to improve the appearance of their teeth and face. Alignment of teeth improves the health of teeth and gums and enhances the function of the teeth to make it easier to eat and speak.

DB Orthodontics won the Queen’s Award earlier this year for its success in international trade. In the last three years, it has recorded foreign sales growth of over 130 per cent and entered 15 new markets, creating a distribution network spanning 45 countries on six continents. DB Orthodontics now employs 28 people, with exports accounting for 29 per cent of its turnover.

Mr Green said: “DB Orthodontics’ expansion provides a huge vote of confidence in its own future and indicates its commitment to the Silsden area. The latest premises deal made sense for both parties, as DB needed the additional space.

“I’ve no doubt David and his colleagues will continue succeeding from their expanded premises. They’ll build on their reputation for delivering high quality, innovative products, excellent customer service and value-for-money, as they move towards their goal of being a global leader in orthodontic and laboratory supplies.”

One of the UK’s most successful law firms, with offices in Leeds and Bradford, Gordons has been established for over 169 years, currently employs 265 people and has a turnover of more than £25.3m.  The firm’s excellence has been recognised in the following award schemes in the last year:
