Christmas nightmare for rail passengers
Thursday 18th December 2014
Vital engineering works are due to cause delays and travel chaos on the West Coast Mainline between Scotland and London during the Christmas break. Limbs of the line between London Euston to Hemel Hempstead and Stafford to Crewe will be completely out of action between Christmas Eve and around 28/29 December. Other large stations such as Birmingham New Street, London Bridge and Paddington will also be shut during the festive season for imperative works.
Whilst a few bus replacement services have been scheduled, the rail companies have advised passengers to use other means of transport or alternative train lines to make their all-important journeys home for Christmas. It is likely that alternative methods and routes will be more time consuming and costly; what a way to dampen festive cheer! However, train operating companies have rightly condoned their festive timing, stating it is traditionally a quieter time of year and it is key for trains to run reliably for the other 360 days of the year.
