Government warns toy businesses that stronger asbestos controls are needed to protect children
Tuesday 18th August 2026
An increasing number of product recalls highlights a rising (and worrying) trend of asbestos contamination in toys. In light of the trend, the government reminds businesses must be able to demonstrate that toys containing sand are safe before being placed on the market.
Whilst product testing can form a part of safety assurance, businesses must have complete supply chain assurance to ensure that the products are safe.
If a business identifies asbestos in a product, immediate action must be taken to protect consumers. Action may include withdrawing or recalling the product from the market.
