Skip manufacturer exposed welders to cancer causing fumes

Tuesday 14th July 2026

The company was fined £30,000 after failing to protect its workers from carcinogenic welding fumes at its site despite being served an enforcement notice.

The skips and metal company continued to carry out mild steel welding without adequate control measures to protect its employees and failed to monitor the health of workers exposed to high levels of noise.

Multiple improvement notices were issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following a visit on 29 August 2024 as there was no exhaust ventilation when welding, the welfare facilities were in adequate, and there was no noise risk assessment, amongst other health and safety issues. When inspectors returned on several occasions, it was clear that no improvement had been made.

The company was found guilty of failing to comply with two Improvement Notices contrary to Section 33(1)(g) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
