Shipping company fined after worker seriously injured

Thursday 11th June 2026

A company has been fined £146,700 after an employee was hit by a forklift truck on the company’s yard and suffered life-changing injuries.

The employee was unclipping the curtain side of an articulated truck when the forklift struck his right leg and pulled him to the ground. He suffered multiple fractures to his right foot and lower leg, and a degloving injury.

The investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the company failed to segregate pedestrians and vehicles, and the traffic plan that was in place did not ensure that loading and unloading could take place safely without putting employees on foot at risk from moving vehicles.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 17(1) of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and Section 33(1)(c) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
