Suspended sentence issued to man after illegal boiler replacement

Thursday 19th February 2026

A man was issued with a suspended sentence after carrying out illegal and dangerous gas work. He pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 3(3), 27(1) and 27(5) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

The man attended a property to carry out some work, including relocating a gas boiler and flue. However, there were issues following its installation and the homeowners arranged for a second engineer to check the installation. The boiler was deemed to be ‘immediately dangerous’ as gas boiler flue was not sealed or correctly positioned, risking a carbon monoxide leak.

The HSE investigation found that the man had no training in gas work, and that he was not registered with the Gas Safe Register (GSR).
