Man sentenced after illegal gas work put pensioner at risk
Thursday 19th February 2026
A man that claimed to be Gas Safe Registered (GSR) has been jailed after lying to carry out work for a 90-year-old pensioner. The man pleaded guilty to contravening Regulation 3(3) and 3(7) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and was jailed for 12 months.
The man had been sent to carry out the gas work by a company who had not verified that he was GSR. The company has also been issued with a prohibition notice.
The man installed a new boiler at the pensioner’s home and issued a fraudulent gas safety certificate, with a fake GSR number, and concern was only raised when his relatives smelt gas. He returned on several occasions to carry out repairs, despite a British Gas engineer issued an ‘immediately dangerous notice’. In June the following year a second engineer issued an ‘immediately dangerous notice’ and completely replaced the boiler.
