HSE launches workplace safety inspections for motor vehicle repair

Thursday 23rd October 2025

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently announced that it will conduct 1,000 targeted inspections on motor vehicle repair businesses.

The inspections will focus on the management of vehicle paint spraying and particularly on workplaces that use isocyanate-containing paints and coatings.

Where these activities take place, the HSE will expect activities to be adequately assessed and appropriate measures are in place to reduce personal exposure.

This is a requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).  The HSE is likely to serve Improvement Notices, Prohibition Notices or formal prosecutions where non-compliance is identified.

Businesses should review their COSHH policy and confirm they have in place up to date COSHH assessments which have been conducted by a competent person.
