Supermarket fined £130,000 for selling out of date food

Monday 13th October 2025

On 14 February 2024 and 20 March 2024, Knowsley Council’s Environment Health team conducted an inspection of a supermarket, which uncovered 59 food items on sale after the use by date had expired.

The store had previously been warned by officers that it needed to improve the checking of use by dates in stores. The officers found that no adequate steps had been taken following this advice.

The company pleaded guilty to six charges of breaching the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. The company was fined £130,000.

This serves as a reminder to businesses that they should acknowledge recommendations and implement their advice. Previous notices can be used in increasing penalties if prosecuted.
