HSE publishes work-related fatality statistics

Monday 4th August 2025

The HSE has published its annual fatality statistics for 2024/25.

There were 124 work-related fatal incidents. Although it’s a decline from the 2023/24 figures, that’s still more than 2 people per week going to work in Great Britain and not making it home.

The most common cause of fatal incidents remains as fall from height, with most of those in the construction sector. This has been the main cause of fatal incidents for around 20 years.

Deaths caused by past exposure to asbestos has decreased slightly on last year’s report, following the projected pattern to continue to decline over the next decade due to reduced exposures.

There has been an increase on last year for members of the public that have sustained fatal injuries as a result of a work-related incident, with 92 recorded vs last year’s 86. This is across various industries such as rail and waste.

Generally, the figures remain steady which highlights there’s still more to do across all industries to prevent fatal incidents in the workplace.
