Trainee Blog - Life in the first seat

Thursday 21st March 2019

Having come straight from university, the thought of actually being a trainee solicitor in a real office was unnerving, yet exciting at the same time.

My first seat was in property litigation. As a student, you hear horror stories about trainees spending hours photocopying and getting limited exposure to clients. This couldn’t be further from the truth at Gordons.

From my first day, I was involved in various cases and quickly felt like a valued member of the team. My supervisor was keen to let me test my knowledge and would often give me challenging bits of work.

Over the six months I spent with the property litigation team, my knowledge grew rapidly. What would have made me feel uneasy in the first week was part of every day life by the time I moved on to work with another team.

Alongside getting great experience, I have also had the chance to get involved in other aspects of the firm. Joining the netball team was a great way to meet other colleagues and show off my lack of hand/ eye coordination!

Gordons also chooses a charity to help each year and this is enthusiastically supported. Fundraising events including a “Gordons Got Talent” evening, which was great fun! Fair to say there is more than just legal talent in the firm.

As I start my second seat, whilst the area of law will be new and the team is different, the skills and confidence gained from my first seat will serve me well.
