The Wharfedale Ton

In 2016, Gordons partner and head of employment, Phil Paget, had the idea of creating a 100-mile charity cycling event involving professionals riding through beautiful Yorkshire countryside. From the initial thought, the hugely successful Wharfedale Ton was born.

Organised by Gordons with support from Lloyds Bank and audit, tax and consulting firm RSM, the first cycle ride across Wharfedale to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice took place in June that year.

Our sponsors include:

Gordons, RSM, Lloyds Bank, Calder World of Travel, Naylor Wintersgill, Lishmans, Craven Jewellers, PIB Insurance Brokers, Roberts Mart & Co, Reed Boardall, Areana Group, Advanced Supply Chain, Brook-Dobson Brear Limited, Melrose Textile Co Ltd, Thorpe Mill Limited.

Chain reaction

The 120 riders cycled a magnificent scenic route, stretching across Wharfedale from Ilkley to York and back again, and raised £6,907.

Following the success of the inaugural event, when the second Wharfedale Ton was held in June 2017 a total of 200 riders took part who almost doubled the proceeds raised for the hospice to £12,671.

Phil Paget said: “It’s fantastic to see so many business people from around Yorkshire getting on their bikes to take on the challenge for such a great cause. We’re also very grateful to the support provided by local businesses in the organisation of the event, as without them the Wharfedale Ton would not be as successful as it is.

“I am very proud of all those who took part, not only for their efforts during the rides, but also those who donated so generously for such a good cause. The Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice provides a range of services for cancer sufferers and their families in Bradford and we are happy to be able to support the hospice in this way.”

Wheels in motion

Phil is already looking forward to 2019, when he hopes the Wharfedale Ton will continue to grow and attract even more participants and corporate sponsorship.

Entrants are invited to ride alone, in pairs or in groups, with many taking part who have never ridden the 100-mile distance before. It takes an average of siz to eight hours to complete the challenge, after which all participants rest their limbs and join each other for some food and drink in Ilkley.

How to enter

The 2019 Wharfedale Ton will be held on Friday, 14 June 2019 and entries are now open. Your riding team can be as big or small as you like – and don’t worry, even if you enter alone you will quickly find fellow riders to ride along with.

Entry is via charitable donation of £30 per rider, all of which is donated to our chosen charity. We also encourage riders to raise additional donations from friends, colleagues, customers and suppliers.
