Matthew Howarth is a Partner and Head of Gordons' commercial litigation department.
Matthew has significant experience in acting for lenders in recovery actions especially professional negligence claims against solicitors and valuers in mortgage related transactions. He is a member of the Professional Negligence Lawyers Association and has recently acted for a lender in a managed project of over 40 negligence claims against solicitors relating to buy to let mortgage transactions. His team advises on all aspects of secured lending shortfalls and potential recoveries relating to these claims.
Matthew also specialises in intellectual property litigation, IT disputes and media litigation. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University and has dealt with a wide variety of contentious intellectual property matters including confidential information, trade marks, database rights, copyright, design rights and patents. He has acted for clients in obtaining and defending applications for interim injunctive relief and has considerable experience in this area.
Matthew has acted on search and seizure orders both for applicants and respondents and has acted as a supervising solicitor on the execution of such orders by third parties.
Matthew also has significant experience in acting for clients seeking or opposing judicial review cases. He has recently acted for a client challenging Natural England’s attempt to modify the operational activities of an owner of protected land, resulting in a five week public inquiry. He worked closely with a team of 4 expert consultants, and a barrister team led by David Elvin QC.
